    My earliest  trick-or-treat memory was when my Mom dressed me up as mini- Santa Claus including makeshift beard stretched from cotton balls and a big jelly belly of rolled up winter scarves. In full action mode, pillowcase slung over my back, we were off on an incredible spooky adventure.  With my two sisters in tow, we trekked through our neighborhood and beyond for miles gathering our massive bounty of sweet treat treasures. Upon returning home we dumped our goody bags out on the green shag carpet. Admiring its luscious beauty we wanted to roll around in our candy as if we were the greedy Three Little Pigs in a luxurious mud bath. Our own personal pots of child's gold. Eyes wide as the moon, we stared salivating over the mouth watering deliciousness of every variety of chocolate bar, Sweet Tarts, Smarties, Pixie Sticks, Necco Wafers, caramels, candy necklaces, wax bottles of  drinkable goo and the occasional box of raisins or homemade cookie. No rocks.

     The day after Halloween, stuffing my face with candy, I manically rode my tricycle on our front porch for thirty minutes like the little boy from The Shining, "Redrum! Redrum!"  My energy level measured  Breaking Bad,"meth addict" on the uncontrollable kid scale. This was soon followed by collapsing into a long sugar induced slumber while watching Sesame Street. C-is for cookie, C- is for coma. Candy wrappers littered our living room like the  driveway of a  Dixie trailer park. Next thing I remember, I slowly woke up with sticky orange drool running down my chin. My stomach felt like it was gut checked by Mike Tyson and I had a Tootsie Roll lollipop suspended in my ponytail.

        So once a year let your mischievous monsters and ghostly goblins imagine they inherited Willy Wonka's factory and let it rain M&M's and Skittles. The memories are sure to haunt them forever.

      Premiering November 14th, Rosewater is based on the best-selling memoir "Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival  by Maziar Bahari.   Screenwriter, comedian, actor, producer and host of "The Daily Show"  Jon Stewart makes his directorial debut. Rosewater follows the Tehran-born Bahari, (Gael García Bernal) a broadcast journalist with Canadian citizenship through months of terrifying injustice. 

     Bahari returned to Iran in June of 2009 to interview Mir-Hossein Mousavi, who was the rival of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.  As Mousavi's supporters began to protest Ahmadinejad's victory hours before ballots were counted or polls closed, Bahari endangered his own life to send footage of intense rioting to the BBC. Soon after, Bahari was arrested by police, and placed under interrogation by an unidentified man who called himself "Rosewater". For the next 118 days, Bahari was imprisoned and systematically tortured. Following an international plea led by Bahari's wife, igniting media outrage in the West, Iranian authorities finally released Bahari on $300,000 bail with an understanding he would spy for their country.

 Rosewater is an unflinching first-hand account of tyranny, oppression and disturbing abuse of political power. It is a story for all times, all nations, all people standing up for their rights everywhere in the world.      What makes a song scary? With Halloween fast approaching, the appropriate music has the power to set ghoulish moods for ghostly celebrations or frightening  tricks-or-treater's from the front porch. But what elements of a composition make the hair on the back of your neck stand on end or send a shiver down your spine?   Researcher Daniel Blumstein, professor and chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California (Los Angeles ) may have an answer. Blumstein is an expert in animal distress calls or in scientific terms "nonlinear chaotic noise.”  He began exploring the link between nonlinear noise and scary music in a 2010 study of film soundtracks discovering horror scores significantly amp up the creep with blood curdling shock waves. Animal screeches, screams, crying babies, a haunting dissonant piano chord all trigger biologically ingrained responses in human beings. Since music is a huge part of our existence and permeates almost everything we do it seems natural that we associate certain sounds with terrifying moments of suspense. Recall any horror or paranormal movie that gripped your imagination, had you covering your eyes or squirming in your seat. You can shield your view but you can't get the sound out of your head. Sounds move us faster than our visual  perception. Your sense of hearing is never really turned off.  So what scary songs are on your bewitching Halloween soundtrack?  Here are a few to consider.

       My all time favorite creepy composition was created by legendary British band Bauhaus. Considered the fathers of Goth rock music, Bauhaus composed an eerie tribute to late Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi (Dracula). The song "Bela Lugosi is Dead" has been featured in horror films  The Hunger, and 2009's The Collector.

      Director, Alejandro G. Iñárritu's black comedy, Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) was shot in what magically appears to be one long continuous take in only thirty days costing a mere 16 million dollars to produce. Ironically, the same glorified show business types the movie mocks have eagerly turned up their thumbs faster than Arthur Fonzarelli attracts hot chicks  Critics have been raving about the depth of Birdman's superb writing, performances and especially Iñárritu's visionary scope as a director. Emmanuel Lubezki, who won an Oscar for cinematography (Gravity )adds effortless edgy beauty to every scene. Birdman was brilliantly scripted by Iñárritu with  Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr.and Armando Bo.

     Starring, the remarkable Michael Keaton as the brooding former superhero Riggan Thomson, Birdman also features an incredible cast including Edward Norton, Zach Galafianakis, Naomi Watts, Amy Ryan and Emma Stone. The Fox Searchlight film premiers October 17th in limited release.

       World renowned physicist, Stephen Hawking is the former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and author of international best seller A Brief History of Time. Now at the age of 72, Hawking is Director of Research at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and Founder of the Center for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge (UK). Incredible, right? What's even more incredible is that in 1963 at the age of 21, Hawking was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (ALS or Lou Gehrigs Disease in the States) and given a mere two years to live. Yet despite facing  his greatest fears and an uncertain future he went on to Cambridge to become an extraordinary researcher and Professorial Fellow at Gonville and Caius College. He is a fellow of the Royal Society and a Member of the US National Academy of Science and is highly regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein.

       Debuting November 7th in the  U.S, The Theory of Everything, with screenplay by Anthony Mc Carten (Death of a Superhero) examines the life of Hawking, the amazing genius Super Mind as well as an intimate glimpse of Hawking as the resilient, love struck school boy.      October is Adopt-A- Shelter-Dog Month.  After reading stories and speaking with pet lovers worldwide we conclude sharing our lives with a special animal enables us to reflect on our own happiness. Dogs seem to awaken our sense of joy every single day. They make us laugh. They make us smile. They make us weep They make us grateful. They avert our hearts and minds to the moment. They are loyal, trusting, honest and true. When we lose them we feel intense grief. And just as we cherish our human relationships we rarely regret the short time span loving our four-legged best friends. There is a deep loving bond uniting dog and owner that is only understood by living the experience rather than simply describing it. Once, just once, every human being should own a dog. Owners envision dogs as every thing from wild adventure buddies, skilled trackers, playful protectors, savvy show dogs, furry friends, children with paws or cuddly couch mates. Dogs are more than mere pets. Dogs are family. Planning to adopt your companion from a rescue or animal shelter?  You're saving a life- not just theirs but many times our own. Studies have shown pet owners are healthier and less prone to heart disease and depression than those without pets.

      Now more than ever dogs in shelters across the country need your help to survive. Over population is a serious issue in the US. Over three million perfectly healthy dogs and cats are euthanized every year. Due to overcrowding, animals in high kill shelters may have as little as a week to live before being put to death. There are simply too many dogs surrendered by families or rescued from hoarders or puppy mills to house or save. Shelters lack resources and tragically, euthanization has become the only humane way to control pet population.
     If adopting a pet isn't an option right now, use social media to get the word out about a local shelter or your favorite rescue. Utilize your own blog or website to include information. Post photo's of adoptable dogs. Organize a spay - neuter awareness campaign. Foster a pet until they find their fur-ever home. Donate money, supplies or volunteer. Better yet, ask your local shelters what they need most. Look into the eyes of any animal who has been rescued. Dogs understand love. Do we?

     When our inner dialogue creates the myth of how our greatest achievements are in the past we need to remind ourselves immediately that we are indeed living in the past. It is easy for the mind to conjure up memories of supposedly happier times. This type of nostalgia is notably reflected in the character Uncle Rico from the movie " Napoleon Dynamite". He tries to recapture his high school quarterback glory days by ordering a time machine from the Internet. All of us have a tendency to romanticize the past especially when we are unsure of the future or uncomfortable with our current situation. When we begin to speak and think in past terms our mind is no longer in the present moment. We are robbing ourselves of precious time in the here and now.

     Do you recall a scene in the comedy classic, "Arthur" where Sir John Gielgud's character unpredictably slaps Dudley Moore in the face after he complains about being unloved? 

"You spoiled little bastard! You're a man who has everything, haven't you, but that's not enough. You feel unloved, Arthur, welcome to the world. Everyone is unloved. Now stop feeling sorry for yourself. And incidentally, I love you." 

    Figuratively, every one of us needs the Hobson slap on occasion to remind us we are not the center of the universe. Life altering events occur in our later years but the unexpected can occur at any moment. Parents experience Empty-Nest Syndrome or grown children move across the country and lose a sense of togetherness. Sadly, you may lose a spouse or significant other. Perhaps you move  a long distance after a job loss or start fresh in a new city after divorce. Be kind and gentle with yourself. Love yourself. We can't expect others to love us if we are not capable of understanding and loving our own true nature. If we feel unloved, ignored or unimportant we should begin to examine, explore and rediscover what we actually need to feel fulfilled. Learn to be comfortable alone. Embrace moments of solitude. There is no one more deserving of your love than you. Most importantly, find a way to comfort and serve others who really need you. Live with compassion. It may not be family, a spouse, a lover or your own children you help but their is a way your love, strength and wisdom are valued and greatly needed in our world.

      Start a new career. Go to school. Take a boxing class. Run a marathon. Adopt a shelter dog. Pose nude for a portrait. Dance until dawn. Learn a new language. Travel. Write a blog. Eat a gallon of ice cream in your underwear. Save the world. It's YOUR LIFE. And it is happening right now. Too many people under forty consider themselves old.  They have their entire future career path streamlined to retirement. When we are concocting all the charts and graphs, analysing data and saving for the stereotypical "old age" mindset, where is your NOW? Are you enjoying life now ? Why do people believe they will be happy in the future if they are incapable of being happy in the present ? Human beings have the desire and capacity to accomplish so much more than we allow each other. We are developing new skills and challenging ourselves at every age. Don't ever let insecure people tell you, YOU ARE TOO OLD. When your spirit is being drowned in a sea of cynical pessimism, it's time to reevaluate the people surrounding you.

     Truth in life's advertising. You can't stop the aging process. But  you can't stop dreaming. Sure there are entire industries of doctors, pharmaceutical companies and beauty product campaigns dedicated and thriving on keeping our society self-conscious about sexual performance, grey hair or sagging skin. People will always choose procedures or "quick fixes" if they truly believe it will make them happier. There is nothing wrong with wanting to feel good or more confident. Do you have to rely on them? The most beautiful people I know or have known accept that we are all aging. It is natural. It is life. Like all things, we too shall pass. Beauty and grace shine in the wisdom of our acceptance.

     This week's Top Ten albums includes New York City's own Interpol.  Their latest release El Pintor (Matador Records) continues to rise since its debut earlier in September, now at number "7" on the Billboard charts. Owning all of Interpol's previous albums and having seen them perform live, I was excited about the launch of  El Pintor. Similar to previous CD's such as "Turn On the Bright Lights, "Antics" and "Our Love to Admire", the more you listen to an Interpol composition the more you uncover a previously neglected melodic mystery or peel back an insightful lyrical layer. Sam Fogarino continues to be one of the best drummers in indie rock. Guitarist, Daniel Kessler magically creates his powerful haunting riffs. Guitarist, lyricist and vocalist Paul Banks mesmerizes at the helm, offering us his eerie yet alluring charisma.

     Critics agree that the premiere track from El Pintor titled "All the Rage Back Home" is the most memorable offering. The brooding "My Blue Supreme" and the driving "Ancient Ways" may soon follow.  The Spanish word "pintor" can be interpreted as painter, decorator or pavement artist which one should keep in mind when transforming this evocative auditory canvas into alternative shades of harmony and reverberation. "Tidal Wave" washes over us with a masterful rhythm. Paul Banks nautical infused lyrical references have beguiled many Interpol fans from "Leif Erikson" to "Take You On a Cruise" and on a current track "Anywhere"-  "the ocean I could go anywhere. I could go anywhere. So free, its my nature to want." Lovers of Interpol will want this emotive sound wave too.

     Many people feel overwhelmed with political questions, time constraints and money issues when it comes to contemplating ways to help save our planet. So put your worries in perspective, without a planet to live on, time and money don't matter. The simple fact is there are hundreds of ways all of us can contribute to healing our Earth. What if you're unable to attend the march or organize an event? Think of what you CAN do rather than what you can't.  The following is a list of ideas that you, your family, your business, community, state and local government can start today.  All of us share the responsibility to act.  Vow to make a positive impact on our environment going forward, not only for your family but for all families and generations to come.

Once a week- GO VEGETARIAN - Did you know it takes approximately 2500 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef?  By skipping meat at least one meal per week ( Meatless Mondays) you are saving the planet and helping your own diet, not to mention saving the life of an animal.

RECYCLE ALUMINUM AND GLASS- look for recycle bins in your area, if they aren't available in your neighborhoods and communities ask why?

STOP USING PLASTIC BOTTLES AND BAGS -plastic is not biodegradable. Each year the US uses almost 84 billion plastic bags- a significant amount of the nearly 500 billion used worldwide.  Reusable cloth or paper bags are the way to go.

TELECOMMUTE- make arrangements with your employer if possible to work from home at least once a week or more. You will save money on vehicle wear and tear, gasoline, transportation fees or fuel. Fewer emissions is better for our air.

GO PAPERLESS- Pay bills online.  Stop paper statements.

 RECYCLE NEWSPAPER

TURN OFF LIGHTS -SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER WHEN NOT IN USE- Most people don't realize they can save a significant amount on their energy bills by turning off their computers rather than allowing it to go into sleep mode. You save 4 cents a day by turning off the computer or 14$ dollars a year.

SHOWER OVER BATH TIME- SHOWER WITH YOUR PARTNER- Conserve water and save money on energy bills. Cut down on lawn watering and car washing.

DON'T LEAVE THE WATER RUNNING WHEN BRUSHING YOUR TEETH. You will smile at the money you save and the water you conserve.

DON'T THROW IT AWAY, GIVE IT AWAY-  Before you decide to toss an old lamp in the garbage or throw away clothing find out if someone else can use or recycle the item. Go to https://www.freecycle.org/

In loving memory of my Aunt Eloise who has passed. My heart and thoughts are with my Uncle Charles,  cousins Jim and Eric. As I recall she was raised near peaceful waters, delighting in the beauty of ocean waves and the calmness of sunlit beaches. She cherished her family, adored her dogs. For many of her former students, friends and colleagues she will be remembered as a lover of  language, a great and patient teacher of words. May we feel her spirit in our moments of silence and know her gentle presence when we speak of her memory.

     Earth is our home. It's our only home. We don't have a back up planet. We don't have a  "Planet B". Remind them that by reducing greenhouse gas emissions we build healthier communities, promote economic innovation and create new jobs.  Most importantly, the next time you're at the polls, vote for politicians who actively support effective climate policies.

          With a screenplay by acclaimed writer Dennis Lehane (Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River ) and an incredible international cast featuring the captivating Swedish actress, Noomi Rapace ( Dead Man Down, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), the UK's remarkable Tom Hardy (Warrior, Inception) and the late superbly talented James Gandolfini (The Soprano's)  THE DROP is one of the most anticipated films of 2014.  Michael R. Roskam, the Academy Award nominated director of Bullhead  exposes the dark, seemingly hopeless underworld of Brooklyn gangsters in his new crime drama opening September 12th. THE DROP captures the despair of an isolated bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through his own neighborhoods dangerous scam of illegally funneling money to local bar mobs  or "drops". Together, Saginowski himself along with his intimidating, protective employer/ cousin Marv (James Gandolfini) find themselves caught up in a crippling heist.
     THE DROP is based on a story Lehane created called "Animal Rescue" which was actually the original title of the movie. A secondary sinister story line unravels a plot of  rescuing tortured and abused animals or mainly the adorable puppy you see in the photo and preview above.  Rated R for mature audiences,  clocking in at 1 hour 46 minutes, Fox Searchlight has limited theater release for enthusiastic fans but hopefully this cinematic payoff will drop in a neighborhood near us all!

                An extremist ideology of any kind distorts perception of reality. The inability to allow others the basic human dignity of freely expressing, practicing or questioning their own belief or political system is a form of psychological enslavement. Oppression, terrorism, violence,  are all  manipulative tactics used to gain power and control. Fundamentalism is characterized by extreme religious behavior which tends to elevate text or literal translation as the infallible words of God rather than translated and interpreted by man. Extremists dislike uncertainty and demand allegiance. A higher purpose allows them to commit atrocities without remorse. Their calling extinguishes their own light of humanity, believing they will be praised and rewarded for deeds in the afterlife. The straight and narrow, obedience, discourages contemplation or questioning. The extremist's world is right or wrong, black or white, left or right, liberal or conservative. There is no gray, no compromise, no need for diplomacy, no mutual respect. Why should there be? You are the devil, evil, less than human and they see themselves as most certainly right.

      Although we immediately identify oppression in other countries we neglect to examine the extremism in our own country or investigate the "American Taliban".  All fundamentalists distort scripture or tenets of a religion in order to establish dominance or gain political sovereignty. Morality is no longer an issue when everything they do is justified as God's will  including beating, starving, torturing men, women and children, honor killings, genocide and rape. Fundamentalism is not only intolerant but sadistically inhuman and sectarian. Extremist ideology systematically condones restricting the rights of women, often seen as less valuable, even less human as a man. Extremists have an almost obsessive restriction on female sexuality and independence. What do they fear? What do they want? Fundamentalist ideas tend to be barbaric and cruel in the face of modern society and modern morality. If we truly wish to understand our enemies we must first look inside ourselves.
